Newsvine periodically pisses me off from time to time... I'm sure it does this as well to others. My way of dealing with it is to delete my account, remove my bookmark, and just forget about Newsvine for a while.
I usually come wandering back eventually, though. My last hiatus from Newsvine lasted about 6 months. Upon my return, I have found a lot less acceptance for my style of writing.
What happened Newsvine? Overwhelming attack of Trolls or something.
I just happen to think there are different definitions as to what constitutes a troll, and troll-like behavior.
A troll is someone who finds a controversial topic, injects themselves into the discussion, and then proceeds to berate everyone for their position, engages in an endless litany of insults leveled at just about everyone, and takes such a contrary position to EVERYONE just because they want to get a rise from everyone. Trolls are usually not all that bright, lazy with their insults, and absolute in their beliefs that they are right and everyone is wrong. We know these people and they're not very likable.
So, I do understand the disdain for Trolls. However, I also have a disdain for idiots. We all know an idiot or two. If you speak with people on these types of message boards, you're going to probably meet more than your fair share of them. So, why not, in the course of a mostly civil discourse, be allowed to call an idiot an idiot especially when they just said something idiotic?
In the old Newsvine (of nearly a year ago) dropping the occasional insult was no big deal. It was no big deal, especially, if you could prove yourself coherent, wrote well, and were funny, engaging, and entertaining (Newsvine is after all a form of entertainment for us, yes?). In the past few months, since I've been back, I must have racked up at least 5 or 6 CoH warnings from various administrators. I have had some of my posts (that I considered smart and funny) censored and deleted, and all I can do is scratch my head.
Why has such strident political correctness overtaken Newsvine?
I understand the need to cut off trolls early on, but the occasional comedic insult thrown in here and there as punctuation to a point should be allowed. And it is, in this new nation known as Absolutely No Censor. Let's look at a few of my last little barbs and some actual trolling comments so everyone understands what is and isn't allowed on this nation:
Here's a disallowed trolling statement: "Your Mother should have aborted you". That's just mean, with no hint of humor or comedic timing. Just a low, down, dirty jab at someone.
Here's a statement I made to a fellow poster on an article who I thought was flip-flopping on a topic: "This guy has more flip-flops going on than a bunch of pasty-white, middle-age Guidos in speedos on a New Jersey beach...". Couple of things to keep in mind, all of my descriptors are about the type of people who may own lots of flip-flop sandals, the only thing directed at my opponent was the concept that he was a flip-flopper. I was warned about using "pejorative racial statements". This warning came about 4 comments later after the one poster and I continued to have an engaging discussion without any hate or anger amongst ourselves other than some playful ribbing. The administrator of this nation was just scanning all the posts, and issued warnings without actually determining the dynamic between myself and the other poster (mostly mutual respect... mostly).
Do you see the difference between an actual trolling statement and my suggesting that my opponent is flip-flopping. Plus... Guidos in Speedos? Huh...? HUH? You probably can't even get that image out of your head now. Is that comedy GOLD or WHAT?
Here's a trolling statement that has absolutely zero value and adds nothing to forwarding a discussion, or entertaining us folks on Newsvine: "All beaners need to be shipped back to Mexico". What does that help? What does that advance? How entertaining is this ignorance? Answers: Nothing, Nothing, Not at All. Definitely a trolling statement.
I was on this one posted article a couple of months ago and the CoH violations I racked up were astonishingly amazing.
An English poster had posted an article called "Hey Ho", which was a reflection upon the usage of England's term "Hey Ho" to denote something one says when they need to carry on and do their duties. To me is seemed like a word game, and indeed other posters were playing around with the term. Always being the wise guy I posted:
- In reply to: XXXXXXXXX #1 Hey Knock it off... Proper English parlance would dictate that you should say, "Pardon me dear, but could you please enlighten me to the actual cost of your services? That's a good girl now. Cheerio!". (Said in reply to the article's title: "Hey Ho". I immediately got a "what are you talking about, your comment makes no sense?" from the author).
- In reply to: XXXXXXXXX #1.3 It makes no sense, because you are my bottom b###h! Now... Ifs you was my Top B###h, you'd be getting it, but you ain't. You's juz my bottom b###h, and from my vantage point, you ain't makin' me no money, no how... So hey ho, get out there and make me some damn money b###h!
- In reply to: Anjisan_Returns #1.39 (NOTE: This is a satirical response, and in no ways is any indication of my Big Daddy Pimping Skills, and I would like to point out for the record that if I did have Big Daddy Pimping Skills, then I would be far too busy with my Big Daddy Pimping Skills to be posting this).
Now, seeing that my posting might be misconstrued, I posted the last post immediately after the second post. And it got a lot of thumbs up, and a lot of "LMAO" comments. No matter. Admin censored the posts, sent me a warning (a strongly worded one that said, "This post is not about 'prostitutes' or 'pimping'."), and told me I was in violation of CoH for going off topic...? Wha....????
Look. I understand that it was probably inappropriate comedy. People might have gotten offended. But I think the intent of my post shines through: I was going for comedy, not trying to attack anyone, or flame anyone for their beliefs. Just trying to be funny....
NOT ON THIS NATION...
Folks, with a little bit of critical thinking, I believe you can tell the difference between a passionate writer who oftentimes goes for a joke versus that other guy, the knuckle-dragging troll, who just wants to leave a path of hurt in their wake. On this board, you have that freedom to explore your creative side a bit. Stay on topic if you can and try to avoid posting incoherent rambling manifestos on how the world should be (leave that to me).
Say what you want. How you want to say it. And have fun saying it... Just... No hate speech. No long, drawn, outpouring of insults and invective onto people. Try to be civil, but don't worry about the occasional insult or when you get a bit "flamey"... Just let it go. Relax, and be yourself.
